OffsetC Privacy Policy

ZeroMe, Inc., doing business as OffsetC (“ZeroMe,” “OffsetC,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and retain personal information when you use offsetc.com, the OffsetC application, and related services (collectively, the “Services”).

This Policy should be read together with our Terms of Service.

1. The Information We Collect

The information we collect depends on how you use OffsetC.

Account and contact information

When you create an account, join a waitlist, contact us, or otherwise interact with OffsetC, we may collect information such as your name, email address, account identifier, communication preferences, and information you choose to provide.

We currently use Clerk to provide account authentication and user-management services. The password is hashed and encrypted so OffsetC cannot see it once it’s stored in Clerk.

Connected financial-account and transaction information

If you choose to connect a financial account, we use Plaid to facilitate that connection.

Depending on the account and Plaid service involved, information made available in connection with the account may include transaction date, amount, merchant or payee information, transaction description or category, and other information associated with transactions.

OffsetC uses financial-transaction information to identify transactions that appear relevant to the gasoline-emissions service and to estimate gasoline purchases and associated emissions.

OffsetC is designed to retain only transaction information relevant to providing the OffsetC service rather than retaining unrelated transaction histories. These include:

• Carbon-credit allocation, retirement, project, and integrity records: retained indefinitely to support substantiation of historical retirements, ongoing monitoring of credit validity, replacement of impaired credits where appropriate, and aggregate community-impact reporting.

• Account/profile PII: retained while the account is active and deleted or anonymized when the user deletes the account, except where specific information must be retained for a legitimate legal, accounting, fraud, dispute, or transaction-support purpose.

• Plaid access credentials: retained only while needed to maintain an active connection. We intend to revoke/delete the Plaid connection after approximately six months of inactivity. The user must reconnect to Plaid if they return.

• Historical gasoline/emissions data: may be retained after account deletion in deidentified or non-identifying form where useful to substantiate calculations, purchases, or aggregate impact.

• Payment/accounting records: retained for the period required for accounting, tax, dispute, refund, and legal purposes. Our working operational standard is seven years.

• Stripe records after account deletion: OffsetC may retain a transaction/reference identifier that allows us to locate the corresponding Stripe record if necessary for a later refund, dispute, legal inquiry, or former-customer support request.

• Security/audit logs: retained for a defined operational/security period.

• Backups: retained only within the applicable 14-day rolling backup/recovery window and overwritten in the ordinary course.

• Email engagement data: retained for up to 12 months for communications/product analytics and product analytics; aggregated or deidentified performance data may be retained indefinitely.

Plaid independently processes information when you use its services. Plaid’s handling of information is governed by its own privacy notices. Plaid’s current End User Privacy Policy explains that data available through connected accounts can include transaction amounts, dates, payees, types, descriptions and, depending on the service, location and other account information.

Payment and purchase information

If you approve a carbon-offset purchase, our payment processor, currently Stripe, processes the payment information necessary to complete the transaction.

OffsetC does not store your complete payment-card number. We may receive limited transaction and payment information from Stripe, such as the amount paid, payment status, transaction identifiers, and other information needed for accounting, customer support, fraud prevention, or refunds.

Stripe also processes information under its own privacy practices. Stripe describes consumers making purchases from merchants using Stripe as “End Customers” and explains that it processes transaction information in connection with those payments.

Carbon-emissions and offset activity

We may create and maintain information derived from your use of the Services, such as identified gasoline transactions, estimated gasoline consumption, estimated greenhouse-gas emissions, proposed offset amounts, purchases you approve, quantities of carbon credits associated with those purchases, retirement information, and impact reports.

Communications and support

We collect information you provide when you contact customer support, send us feedback, respond to surveys, or otherwise communicate with us.

Website, device, and usage information

When you use our website or application, we or our service providers may automatically receive technical and usage information such as your IP address, device or browser type, operating system, pages or screens viewed, buttons or features used, approximate timestamps, error information, and similar usage data.

We use this information to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the Services and to understand how people use them.

OffsetC does not use personal information to track your activity across unrelated websites or applications for behavioral advertising.

2. Where We Get Information

We obtain personal information from you; from financial institutions and financial-data providers when you choose to connect an account; from payment processors when you make a purchase; automatically from devices and browsers that interact with our Services; from service providers that help us operate the Services; and from carbon-credit partners where necessary to report or confirm purchases and retirements.

We may also create information by calculating or inferring information from data we receive—for example, by estimating the quantity of gasoline associated with a transaction and the resulting greenhouse-gas emissions.

3. How We Use Information

We use personal information to provide and operate OffsetC; create and administer accounts; connect financial information at your direction; identify relevant gasoline transactions; calculate estimated emissions; present proposed offset purchases; process approved payments; procure and document carbon-credit retirements; prepare impact information; provide customer support; send account, security, purchase, and service communications; prevent fraud and protect the Services; comply with legal and accounting obligations; analyze and improve the product; and develop new features.

We may also use deidentified or aggregated information that cannot reasonably be linked to an individual for analytics, research, product improvement, and reporting.

We will not attempt to reidentify information that we have maintained as deidentified except as permitted by applicable law.

4. How We Disclose Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We may disclose personal information to service providers and partners that perform functions necessary to operate OffsetC. These currently include categories such as:

Plaid, for financial-account connectivity and transaction information that you authorize; Stripe, for payment processing; Clerk, for account authentication and user management; CNaught and related carbon-market providers, where necessary to procure, retire, document, or report carbon credits; Twilio SendGrid, for email notifications; Sentry for analytics; Slack, for notification of system alerts; Heroku (Salesforce) for backend API; Timescale Cloud (TigerData) for customer data; Cloudflare, for hosting; Expo EAS, Apple, and Google for Mobile app development.

We may also disclose information to professional advisers such as attorneys, accountants, insurers, and auditors; to law-enforcement or governmental authorities where legally required or where necessary to protect rights and safety; and to a buyer, investor, successor, or other participant in a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, bankruptcy, or similar corporate transaction, subject to appropriate legal protections.

We may disclose information when you direct us to do so or consent to the disclosure.

5. Sale, Targeted Advertising, and Cross-Site Tracking

OffsetC does not sell personal information for money.

Based on our current practices, we also do not disclose personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising based on your activity across unrelated businesses, websites, or applications.

If those practices change, we will update this Policy and provide any notices, consent mechanisms, or opt-out rights required by applicable law before beginning the new practice.

6. Your Financial Information and Plaid

Connecting a financial account is optional, but some OffsetC features may not work without the transaction information needed to identify gasoline purchases.

Your relationship with Plaid is separate from your relationship with OffsetC. Plaid may receive information directly from you, your device, and your financial institution in order to establish and maintain the connection you request.

You may be able to manage Plaid connections using tools provided by Plaid, your financial institution, or OffsetC.

Disconnecting an account generally prevents new financial information from being obtained through that connection. It does not automatically remove information that OffsetC previously received and is permitted or required to retain.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including to provide the Services, maintain transaction and carbon-retirement records, comply with tax, accounting, legal, and regulatory requirements, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and enforce agreements.

When you delete your account or request deletion, we will delete or deidentify personal information that we are not required or permitted to retain from our own active records, revoke Plaid access, and delete the Clerk authentication account, while retaining records needed for accounting, transaction history, carbon-retirement integrity, disputes, and other legitimate/legal purposes.

Information may remain for a limited period in backups or disaster-recovery systems for 14 days until those systems are overwritten through their ordinary retention cycle.

We may retain a transaction identifier that permits us to locate the corresponding record maintained by Stripe in order to facilitate investigations into later charge disputes, refunds, legal inquiries, or former-customer questions. Stripe itself may continue to hold identifying/payment information. 

Service providers may retain information according to their own legal obligations and applicable agreements.

8. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live and whether applicable law applies to OffsetC, you may have rights concerning your personal information. These can include the right to request access to information about you; correct inaccurate information; delete information; obtain a portable copy of certain information; withdraw consent where processing depends on consent; opt out of certain sales, sharing, profiling, or targeted advertising; and appeal a decision concerning a privacy request.

OffsetC currently does not sell personal information or use personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as described above.

You may request access, correction, or deletion by contacting us at info@offsetc.com.

We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.

If we deny a request and applicable law gives you a right to appeal, you may appeal by replying to our decision or contacting info@offsetc.com with the subject “Privacy Appeal.”

You may also designate an authorized agent to make a request where applicable law permits. We may require verification of the agent’s authority and your identity.

9. Marketing Communications

You may unsubscribe from promotional emails using the unsubscribe link in those messages.

Even if you opt out of marketing communications, we may continue to send non-promotional messages necessary to operate your account or provide services you requested, including security notices, purchase confirmations, retirement information, and important policy updates.

10. Cookies and Similar Technologies

“Cookies” are pieces of information that may be placed on your computer by a service for the purpose of facilitating and enhancing your communication and interaction with that service. Many services use cookies for these purposes. Our website and application may use cookies (and similar items such as clear gifs, web beacons, tags, etc.) on the Services to customize your visit and for other purposes to make your visit more convenient or to enable us to enhance the Services.  We may also use and place cookies (and similar items) on your computer from our third party service providers in connection with the Services. In addition, business partners may set cookies and similar items on your computer when you use the Services. You may stop or restrict the placement of cookies on your computer or flush them from your browser by adjusting your web browser preferences, in which case you may still use the Services, but it may interfere with some of its functionality. Cookies and similar items are not used by us to automatically retrieve personally identifiable information from your computer without your knowledge.​ If you delete your cookies, change browsers or use a different cookie, our cookie (or an opt-out cookie) may no longer work and you will have to reinput (or opt-out) again.

11. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Children

OffsetC is not intended for individuals under 18, and we do not knowingly permit individuals under 18 to create OffsetC accounts or make purchases.

If we learn that we collected personal information from a child in a manner inconsistent with applicable law, we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

13. International Users

OffsetC is operated from the United States, and information may be processed and stored in the United States and other locations where our service providers operate.

If we make the Services available to individuals outside the United States, additional privacy rights, legal bases, transfer mechanisms, or notices may apply.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as our Services, data practices, or legal obligations change.

We will post the updated Policy and change the “Last Updated” date. If changes are material, we will provide additional notice where appropriate or required by law, such as through the Services or by email.

Where applicable law requires consent to a new use of personal information, we will seek that consent rather than relying solely on an updated Policy.
